CHOOSING A HOTEL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
These days almost everyone is using a computer, and those who are still
holding out are at a definite disadvantage. As more and more make the switch,
the question becomes,"Which one will I choose to automate my
property?" Making sure the company you select matches your business is
probably the most important item in choosing a computer system.
The first thing to look at is what size property the program was designed around.
You wouldn't want to use a program designed around a 600-room Hilton to run your 75-room
Best Western. The operations are too different. Remember, large properties tend
to have more departments. Many small properties will have one person
wearing many hats. Make sure the program is designed to match your operating style.
The key here, "Use the right tool for the right job."
Next, find out if they participate in the same organizations as you do. Have you seen
them each year at the tradeshow conventions? Do they attend seminars, making sure they stay
up on the latest trends? Do you recognize the people within their company or are they
always changing?
Take the time to find out who are the people within the company. Make sure
they have experience in the hotel industry. The more experience they have, the better
the program, training, and the support will be.
When you have the program demonstrated to you, make sure it is easy to
learn. Does the person showing the system understand your business? Look to see
what features they have that show this system can be fine-tuned to your operations.
The program should have more features than you think you can use; that way you
won't out grow it. Ask if there are upgrades. Remember this system should be with you
for a long time.
One concern to anyone is, "Will they be around?" Two of the best
indications of that is how long they have been in business and how many other systems
they have replaced.
Finally, ask your friends what system they are using. Ask if they are happy with
the program and the support. Remember most businesses are open Monday through
Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. This is just a small portion of the time most hotels are
open.
Make sure you are comfortable before making the change. After all, it is one of the most
significant changes you will make to your operations.
